It was a warm night at Marianne and Tim’s property in Fernmount.
I got talking with Alan Britton, bass player with The Bondi Cigars.
I went upstairs after being told there was a present for me, behind a painting. Tim then showed a present in the fridge
I got back to Long Beach, two days later and was still laughing.
I saw photos of Tim receiving a medal in Saigon and I know there were photos taken of me in my pink beanie. A sight Tim found very amusing.
Fernmount with Annette and Mau and Tim became a second home for me during a period of transition and I’ll be back there in March. A place of peace.
Things have changed. Tim and Annette have gone but now there is a swimming pool.
And Peter Greste. Tim and Mau put me on to Peter, shortly after his return to Australia.
I can’t wait to return and it’ll be martini time again and we’ll be reduced in numbers but not in spirit.
To be considered part of this special group remains humbling. And so many great memories.
And more to come.

1979. Our bi-annual drive to Perth, to spend time with our father, in Scarborough. Three and a bit weeks spent at the beach, Steve’s on a Friday night, catching up with friends, a social cricket match and a trip or two to Margaret River.
Visiting Craig Spence and magazine supporters, OPAN, in Surry Hills.
A trip to Daylesford, an art gallery and a Japanese getaway.
A Chord Change in Blue in Green, written on an early morning drive from Torquay to Melbourne airport.
And, magazine artistic director Kirstie Wyatt, giving away furniture.

On the last Saturday afternoon for 2023, I’ve just returned from taking Frankie for a walk. She made friends with tradies doing a house renovation and they loved her. I rewarded her by visiting the local butcher and buying a bone. That outta keep her occupied for 24-hours.
Now, in the backyard, I’m sitting, listening to the ABC Sports podcast. A copy of the Saturday Age, in the chair next to me. Talking about podcasts reminds me that the Gary Mac/Greg T Ross TLP Radio Show Podcast is due to be launched in a few weeks. It’ll be a lot of fun, with a light-hearted look at the news, guests, music, interviews and a serious look at matters affecting veterans and us all.
Sometimes, with a bit of planning and belief, things seem to fall into place and just happen.
Time for a read of the paper. And a martini.

About The Last Post

Launched in the Spring of 2011, this full-colour quality magazine is the re-birth of a much smaller version of the magazine produced by Publisher Greg T Ross’ father back in the 70’s and 80’s. Back then it was an almanac/directory for the country’s returned servicemen and women.
