A repost from the 3rd of August last year.

A very heart-warming photograph of a driver from the Royal Regiment of Artillery, lying in the grass reading. His horse is lying resting on the grass with him. The caption for the photograph taken on the Western Front during WW1 is 'Good Friends'.

The photograph shows the strong bond that often developed between the drivers and their horses.

There is no exact number of the horses, mules and donkeys lost in WW1, but some estimate it as high as 8 million.

Conditions were very severe for horses on the Western Front. Many were killed by artillery fire, suffered from skin disorders, and were injured by poison gas.

One of the most moving films I have seen is ‘War Horse’. A 2011 film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg. An incredible movie.

Lest We Forget.

Photograph came from the National Library of Scotland.

VALE
429816 Warrant Officer
Douglas Raymond LEAK Ld’H (1923-2021)

Former RAAF Warrant Officer Doug Leak passed away on 6 January 2021, aged 97. He was one of the last surviving veterans of Bomber Command. Doug was born at Medindie in South Australia on 17 June 1923, and served during the war as a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner on Lancaster II and III heavy bombers. After the war, he ran a successful taxation accountancy firm in Adelaide.

For his role in hampering the German industrial effort, which supported the liberation of France, Doug was appointed a Chevalier (‘Knight’ of the Order, 5th Class) of the French National Order of the Légion d’honneur, which was presented in Adelaide on 1 March 2016. Doug was the first to be nominated for his role with Bomber Command and his award became a precedent, allowing further surviving Bomber Command veterans to apply for the decoration.

Historic Moments

Simone Segouin, mostly known by her codename, Nicole Minet, was only 18-years-old when the Germans invaded. Her first act of rebellion was to steal a bicycle from a German military administration, and to slice the tires of all of the other bikes and motorcycles so they couldn't pursue her. She found a pocket of the Resistance and joined the fight, using the stolen bike to deliver messages between Resistance groups.

She was an extremely fast learner and quickly became an expert at tactics and explosives. She led teams of Resistance fighters to capture German troops, set traps, and sabotage German equipment. As the war dragged on, her deeds escalated to derailing German trains, blocking roads, blowing up bridges and helping to create a German-free path to help the Allied forces retake France from the inside. She was never caught.

Segouin was present at the liberation of Chartres on August 23, 1944, and then the liberation of Paris two days later. She was promoted to lieutenant and awarded several medals, including the Croix de Guerre. After the war, she studied medicine and became a pediatric nurse. She is still going strong, and this October (2021) she will turn 96. ❤️

This evening we commemorate the service and sacrifice of 1797 Warrant Officer Class One Raymond Kevin Nichols, 106th Field Workshop, of Bundaberg, Queensland, who died of illness in South Vietnam on this day in 1970, aged 39. His sacrifice is commemorated at the Springvale Garden of Remembrance & Crematorium, Victoria.

Ray arrived in South Vietnam on 21 October 1970, and had a massive heart attack on 28 December, which caused his death.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

About The Last Post

Launched in the Spring of 2011, this full-colour quality magazine is the re-birth of a much smaller version of the magazine produced by Publisher Greg T Ross’ father back in the 70’s and 80’s. Back then it was an almanac/directory for the country’s returned servicemen and women.
